Preparing for your appointment

Remember, your health care provider is there to help you. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your appointment.

  • Think about your personal health care goals, especially what you want to get out of today’s visit.

  • Make a list of questions or things you want to talk about during the appointment.

  • Clearly describe your symptoms including the part of your body affected, when it started, what it feels like, and if certain activities make it worse. You may want to write this information down before your appointment so you have it ready.

  • Find out about your family’s health history, including if any relatives have had diabetes, cancer, or other conditions as this may increase your risk for certain illnesses, and share this information with your health care provider.

  • Tell your health care provider about any medicines (prescription or over the counter) vitamins and/or herbal remedies you are taking.

  • Find out when you should come back for another visit. If necessary, schedule the appointment before you leave the clinic.

  • Find out if you need any blood work, x-rays, or other tests done and exactly what steps to take.

  • Ask if there are any medications/prescriptions you will need. Make sure you know where to get your medication and understand when and how to take it.

  • Ask if there are any warning signs or symptoms, you should watch for after you start taking a prescription.

  • If you speak a language other than English, the clinic may have staff who speak your language or may be able to provide phone based interpretation. If not, you can bring a trusted family member or friend to your appointment to provide language interpretation, if you want to.
